[Practice] Create a TierList

(Taken from a Teaching Workshop)

LEVEL: High-Beginner or later

TIME: 20-30 minutes + (presentation time x student count)

PURPOSE: Speaking, Explain Reasoning

PREPARATION + MATERIALS:

  • The Internet!
  • Powerpoint/Computer Access OR Paper
  • Optional, but recommended: Pre-create tier list of 10 things to rank

GOAL: Students rank things they like and explain their reasoning to others. Also good for vocabulary introduction.

ACTIVITY:

Pick a topic with 10 things (example: instruments). Have the class help you put them on the tier list as to what is the best and worst.

Students then need to create their own tier list of a different 10 things. To help narrow things, you can have options as to what they should rank (eg. 10 food items they’ve tried in the US). They then need to show this to the class and explain their ranking.
